We would like to announce our newest title – Men of Yesterday: A Series of Character Sketches of Prominent Men Among the Disciples of Christ by Thomas W. Grafton – is now available.

Men of Yesterday (cover)Originally published in 1899, Men of Yesterday contains six brief biographies of some prominent figures in the Restoration Movement.

  2. Barton W. Stone (1772-1844)
  3. John Smith (1784-1868)
  4. Isaac Errett (1820-1889)
  5. Barton W. Johnson (1833-1894)
  6. Otis A. Burgess (1829-1882)

By the time this material was originally published, the issues that had caused controversy among brethren in the Restoration Movement (the missionary society and instrumental music) had been thoroughly debated and the division between conservative and progressive brethren was all but “official.” The author of this material wrote from the perspective of the progressive Disciples of Christ. Benjamin L. Smith, who wrote the introduction to this book, was the Secretary of the American Christian Missionary Society. There are sections of the book in which the author’s bias against the conservative brethren is evident. Even so, this material contains valuable historical information about six prominent figures in the Restoration Movement and is being made available to the reader for this reason.

The Plan of Salvation (cover)We would like to announce our newest title – The Plan of Salvation: Made Plain to the Sinner by John H. Hundley – is now available.

John H. Hundley (1796-1881) spent most of his life in the area of Mooresville, Limestone County, Alabama. Once a member of the Presbyterian Church, his open-minded study of the Scriptures – along with the influence of Walter Scott’s journal The Evangelist – led him to be immersed into Christ and help found the church of Christ in Mooresville.

In The Plan of Salvation, Hundley endeavored to present the gospel message about how a sinner can be saved from his sin. Originally published in 1858, this material explains how people obeyed the gospel in the first century, how they needed to do so in the 19th century, and how we must do so today.

John Campbell Roady (1887-1976) preached the gospel for over seventy years, traveling all over the country and baptizing over 15,000 souls into Christ. Part of his efforts in preaching included his work as a writer.

To Sum the Whole Thing Up is a collection of writings containing three booklets published by Roady – What the Church of Christ Believes and Teaches and Why It Teaches It, The Plea of the Church of Christ, and Christ and His Church – in addition to several articles of his that were published in the Apostolic Review. The Reformation For Which We Are Pleading: A Collection of Articles by Moses E. LardWe would like to announce our newest title – The Reformation For Which We Are Pleading: A Collection of Articles by Moses E. Lard – is now available.

Moses Easterly Lard (1818-1880) and his family, when he was eleven years old, moved to Missouri where he would grow up, learn about the gospel, and begin preaching. He became a gifted speaker and accomplished writer among those associated with the Restoration Movement. He distinguished himself at Bethany College and was later selected by Alexander Campbell himself to review Jeremiah B. Jeter’s Campbellism Reviewed, an attack on Campbell’s teachings. Lard is also known for Lard’s Quarterly, a journal he published from 1863 to 1868, and his commentary on the book of Romans.

The Reformation For Which We Are Pleading is a collection of articles written by Lard and published in Lard’s Quarterly. This volume has been put together for the purpose of making the written work of one of the prominent second-generation Restoration Movement preachers accessible to a new generation of Bible students.

This is the sixth release in our Ancient Landmarks Collection. This collection is made up of materials that have been produced by those associated with the Restoration Movement.
