Their Eyes Were Opened

The Gospel Restored

It is said of our First Parents, after they had sinned, that their eyes were opened. Now, reader, if this was the fact with them, be assured that it is the fact with all who obey the gospel. There is a glorious magic in the word of God—the magic of unalterable truth; and the eyes of all who obey him are opened to matters which previously were wholly hid from their eyes. Adam possibly promised himself an easy forgiveness; the antediluvians lightly esteemed the word of God by his servant Noah who preached to them. Pharaoh haughtily exclaimed, “Who is this Jehovah, that I should let Israel go?” And Israel themselves tempted him in the desert and questioned his word; but Adam and the antediluvians and Pharaoh and Israel discovered to their own fatal dismay that, however lightly they had esteemed God’s word, there is no lightness with him. He means what he says. And if men obey the gospel their eyes are most assuredly opened to the propriety of the course which they have chosen to pursue; and if they do not obey it, their eyes will just as assuredly be opened finally to their own fatal mistake, the mistake of trifling with the word of so great a King as God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.—Has he commanded men every where to believe in the name of his Son our Lord, to reform, and be immersed? There is no question of it. The faith, the gospel as it began to be preached at Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, was to be preached in all the world. All then, who hear of the faith preached at Jerusalem, are bound to obey it in the form given to it there, for in no other was it to be preached to the world. Now it may seem a light matter to deviate from the primitive annunciation of the gospel by those who were inspired to speak it correctly; but all who are guilty of such a deviation, will doubtless, one day, have their eyes opened to the danger of their own unfortunate procedure. Reader, return to the primitive faith, the primitive church order, and the primitive morals of Christianity, and you will soon perceive the infinite propriety of the course which you have adopted.

Idolatry and Atheism

The Gospel Restored

The true faith, in its journeyings from the days of primitive man, has had to contend with powerful obstacles, and has never yet triumphed over them in such a manner as to become the religion of the world. It has suffered by foes and by friends: but idolatry and atheism have ever been its greatest enemies.

Atheism opposes it by a bold and direct denial of its proposition, and by asserting that there is no God. This, however, is a doctrine which has never been relished by a majority of mankind; though as in ancient so in modern times it has been very popular with a middle class of philosophers, and with such of the people as were unfitted by the defectiveness of their education to read the writings of profounder men, and more celebrated philosophers. The sentiment, then, is toto caeto adverse to the general proposition of revealed religion, and in its march among the people renders faith in God unnecessary by denying his existence.

Second to atheism in its birth and superior to it in influence with mankind has been idolatry, or the worship of false gods.—When man departed from the only true God he fell into a condition in which he was necessarily more exposed to that spirit which had seduced him from his original uprightness. Having become his prey we may be sure that so mighty and vile a conqueror would not easily resign his claims to that prey, but that every possible means would be put into requisition to frustrate the scheme of belief set afoot for our redemption.

The great adversary of God and man had upset the original institution. This admitted, we may well suppose, that his next effort would be directed against the remedial scheme by faith.—This was no mean enterprise, but called for a subtilty not inferior to that which was employed by him in his original design against the world. But how could faith in the general proposition of true religion be destroyed? By atheism? This was not sufficiently popular in its nature; and was moat likely to lose in practice what it promised in theory, and to be as feeble in effect as it was mighty in pretence. What was to be done?

Idolatry, and Satan is declared by scripture to be the author of it, idolatry was introduced; and this proved itself entirely adequate to the exigencies of the case, How? By substituting Polytheism for the true proposition, and knowledge for faith! Idolatry, by introducing the worshipper to sensible communion with the gods, exalted itself above the true religion, and by substituting knowledge for faith, rendered the last abortive, contemptible, and unnecessary; for the moment a man believed in an idol as God and yielded personal homage to it as such, instantly his faith in the true God evaporated and was abolished if he had heretofore held to that faith; and if he had not, then his first act of devotion sealed him idolatrous and made it impossible for him in future to participate in the blessings and rites of the true religion. Thus idolatry substituting false gods for the true God, and false knowledge for true faith, easily won upon the senses and impatience of mankind; and by its shows and fascinations marched triumphant through the world, destroying in its progress every vestige of revealed religion, and all the principles of faith and hope and love to which that religion gives birth, polluting and degrading the morals of mankind, till the benighted population of our globe were “filled with all unrighteousness.”

NEW RELEASE: The Gospel Restored

We would like to announce our newest title – The Gospel Restored by Walter Scott – is now available.

The Gospel Restored (cover)Originally published in 1836, this book contains an in-depth discourse about God’s plan of redemption.

Walter Scott (1796-1861) was one of the leading figures in the beginning of the Restoration Movement. He was known as the “Golden Oracle” for his ability to captivate audiences as he proclaimed the ancient gospel. He employed the “five finger exercise” to help his audiences – children and adults – remember the gospel message (faith, repentance, baptism, remission of sins, gift of the Holy Spirit).

The Gospel Restored is a discourse of the true gospel of Christ. As Scott stated in the preface, professing Christians had “unhappily strayed from the scriptures and true Christianity.” Therefore, he said there was “no remedy…but a return to original ground.” This return to the “Ancient Order” is the purpose for which this volume was written.

LIMITED TIME OFFER: Through May 31, 2018, The Gospel Restored – as well as every other title in our Ancient Landmarks Collection* – is on sale for 15% off the regular price.

Continue as it Was in the Beginning

Proving the Church of Christ

Remember Christian, YOU are a part of the church (1 Corinthians 12:13). As such, it depends largely on YOU as to the continuance of the church as it was in the beginning. As we mentioned in Chapter One, the resulting “many religions” came because some discontented member(s) of the Lord’s church thought he had a better idea than God (1 John 2:19). If the church is to continue as it was in the beginning, then we must mind the same rule (Philippians 3:16-17).

No Right to Change God’s Rule

Proving the Church of Christ

Most troubles in any religious organization originate when mankind usurps the authority of Christ Jesus, substituting their own ideals. God’s wisdom remains unsurpassed and of unmatched authority (Revelation 19:6); therefore, it is not in man that walks to direct his own steps (Jeremiah 10:23). God’s instructions regarding life and godliness began with Adam and Eve (Genesis 1-3). When God commanded they must not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17), He permitted no negotiation in this matter. His commandment was RULE or government. When man changed this rule, man sinned: they rebelled against God’s unchangeable rule! The same is true today in religious matters. Whenever man changes God’s established government (rule) and substitutes his own thinking, man’s thinking will fail! Since the church of Christ is His church, its members have no right to change the government!
