Official Release: “Early History of the Disciples in the Western Reserve”

Today is the official release date for our latest title – Early History of the Disciples in the Western Reserve by Amos S. Hayden.

Early History of the Disciples in the Western Reserve (Hayden) - coverThe Restoration Movement was an exciting period when a large number of religious people began to awaken to the truth that one could serve God apart from the churches and creeds of men. They sought to “restore” the New Testament church and pattern.

Some got closer than others. It took time for some denominational practices and beliefs to be abandoned. But it is encouraging to read of those who worked to “unite all the disciples of Jesus in one church, with the Bible as the only authoritative standard of faith and practice” (Early History of the Disciples, p. 19).

This book contains many valuable lessons from those connected with this Restoration effort, focusing on the region of Northeast Ohio, known at that time as the Western Reserve.

B. C. Goodpasture, in his foreword to Earl Irvin West’s Search for the Ancient Order, listed Early History of the Disciples in the Western Reserve, along side Robert Richardson’s Memoirs of Alexander Campbell, as a principle source of Restoration history. If you do not have a copy of Hayden’s book, it is a good reference to have in your library.
